European Championship 2016 Results

Postby Jon#606 » Fri 16 Dec 2016, 11:59 pm

The 2016 LFS Bangers Grades season came to a conclusion tonight with the European Championship from Warneton. 15 drivers competed to claim the red and yellow chequered roof that was being displayed by 220 Nova for potentially the final time as he is to leave the league following this season.

There were six drivers from the Top 20 that failed to attend and one driver who did not qualify through the qualifiers attended. Therefore, there was no Last Chance Qualifier held and the driver in question - 312 Mr. T-Bone - was placed at the back of the grid.

Here is the grid of fifteen drivers that contested the 2016 European Championship (reigning champion denoted by the italic C in white brackets next to their name; pole is on the left due to the reversed track direction):

200 Youngy - - - - - - - 47 Michal
27 Cap - - - - - - - - - - 220 Nova (C)
870 Looney - - - - - - - 474 Miniman
616 Jam - - - - - - - - - 380 Pennywise
70 Aaron - - - - - - - - - 997 Rik
669 DarkMetalTim - - - 66 Hammertime
228 Splat - - - - - - - - - 606 Jon
312 Mr. T-Bone - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

In another fantastic championship race, the lead changed numerous times between many racers, but a driver who had been near the front all night only took the lead when it really mattered...

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP:
1st: Jam
2nd: Miniman
3rd: Rik
Other finishers: Youngy, Hammertime, Looney, Cap, Nova, Jon, Splat

Nova's final LFS meeting ended in failure as he could not retain his European title. He has been a very impressive driver over the years but never got the title haul to reflect it - his World of Tarmac title in 2008 and the Euro last year his only major titles - and he will be missed from the LFS Bangers league.

Instead, the winner of the final grades title of the year is a relative newcomer to LFS Bangers in 616 Jam. Jam broke away at the end after Looney, who had led for a number of laps, got caught up with 2 to go on the bottom bend and let the blue roof through. This has been a very good year for Jam, with great performances across all formulas, and this title win is the icing on his 2016 cake. It was a Dutch 2-3 as Miniman claimed a good second while British champion Rik claimed the final podium place. As always, commiserations to those who finished the 22 lap race but got nothing for it.

The European Championship was the final qualifier before the Champion of Champions meeting at the end of the season. The lucky person who qualified will be revealed below the results... 8-)

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS QUALIFIER
The Champion of Champions qualifier from the European Championship meeting is the winner of the British Championship.

Jam won the European Championship, but had already qualified for the Champion of Champions meeting after qualifying through the Figure 8 Points Table. Per the rules, this means the qualifier from the European Championship is the next best non-qualified driver, so the European Championship Champion of Champions qualifier is...

66 Hammertime

Hammertime's place on the CoC grid is the OUTSIDE of the FIRST ROW.

This has been a brilliant achievement for the young Dutchman, who always tries his hardest in every meeting but usually ends up rolled over! However, his fifth place finish sees him claim the fifteenth and final place on the Champion of Champions grid before the meeting itself in 2 weeks as everyone in front of him had qualified earlier in the season. The full grid for the 30th December meeting will be previewed soon... 8-)

So, just to reminder you:
