2017 2 LITRE WORLD FINAL RESULTS

Postby Jon#606 » Fri 15 Sep 2017, 11:51 pm

The biggest meeting of the season decided the second graded title as Arena Essex once again hosted the 2 Litre World Final. The meeting saw a number of old faces return, including 2015 winner 307 Foster, long-time regulars 125 Gildo and 97 Jake W. making their first appearances of the year and sporadic competitor 540 Chunk. With the thirteen in attendance being the highest for a while, it's still slightly disappointing for the biggest meet of the year. :(

FIve of the 12 drivers who qualified were absent, and with six non-qualified drivers in attendance, it was decided that all the non-qualified drivers would make it onto the World Final grid based on their finishing positions in the Last Chance Race; any drivers who didn't finish would be ordered by race number. The Last Chance Race's result was as follows:

Last Chance Race: Gildo, Pennywise, Bokito, Foster (Jake W. & Chunk DNF)

In what was one of the more exciting LCRs seen in LFS Bangers, Gildo emerged victorious ahead of Pennywise and Bokito with Foster, Jake W. and Chunk attempting to wreck the rest of them.

Consequently, this was the grid of thirteen drivers that contested the 2017 2 Litre World Final (reigning champion denoted by the italic C in gold brackets next to their name):

616 Jam - - - - - - - - - - - 27 Cap
66 Colin - - - - - - - - - - - 870 Looney
47 Michal - - - - - - - - - - 606 Jon
125 Gildo - - - - - - - - - - 960 Pepino (C)
212 Bokito - - - - - - - - - 380 Pennywise
97 Jake W. - - - - - - - - 307 Foster
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 540 Chunk

One driver dominated the majority of the race, but was pegged back by two continental drivers before finally shaking both of them off his tail and claiming the title that has eluded him for so long...

2017 2 LITRE WORLD FINAL:
1st: Cap
2nd: Michal
3rd: Pennywise
Other finishers: Pepino, Jam, Gildo, Bokito

After ten seasons and remarkably only two graded titles to his name in that time - the 2009 British Championship and 2016's Points Table - the godfather of LFS Cap at long last picks up a graded gold roof. Having led practically the entire race, going into the last 5 laps #27 was attempted to be stopped by both Chunk and Bokito on the top bend numerous times, allowing both Pepino and Michal through to the lead in the process. However, after the reigning champion was stopped by Gildo and then the Czech driver lost control attempting to spin the leader, there was no stopping Cap from winning; not even an agonisingly close last lap lunge from #960 could prevent an eighth different driver being crowned World Champion. Pepino's lunge proved costly as Michal gave him one of his own on the last bend to lose second to #47 and then failed to finish on the podium altogether as Pennywise was the surprise final place in the top 3, replicating Team Bandicoot teammate Rik's failure to make the podium last year. As always, commiserations to the others who finished the 22 lap race but got nothing for it.

It cannot be overstated just how surprising it is that Cap never claimed the big one until now. He has attended practically every single meeting since the league's founding and the huge effort he's put in when racing just rarely resulted in anything for some reason. Congratulations are more than deserved.
