2018 MICRO BANGERS WORLD FINAL RESULTS

Postby Jon#606 » Fri 30 Nov 2018, 11:51 pm

The little cars' big event of the season was decided tonight at Gizmo's Stadium with the 2018 Micro Bangers World Final, and was the second running of the event. Thanks in no part to Brett's promotion of just one of the many fantastic skins that were on show, the meeting attracted an excellent 17 drivers. This included Scottish female debutant #2 Erinn and a more than overdue return for one of LFS Bangers's oldtimers in Yorkshireman #8 Tim. 271 Kizza also made a return nearly 2 years after his last appearance, while multiple title winner 307 Foster also made a rare recent appearance alongside the returning 47 Michal.

With 7 drivers attending who were not on the grid (with 10 having qualified through the points table although 2 were moved into the grid due to absences) this meant that a Last Chance Qualifier was held between Erinn, Tim, 90 Joey, Kizza, Foster, 337 Spook and 673 Sam, with the top two going through. The result was as follows:

Last Chance Qualifier: Erinn, Kizza, Foster, Tim, Sam, Spook

An incredible win on debut for the incredibly talented Erinn saw returning Kizza also claim a spot in the World Final, although Foster held the lead for quite a while until Joey repeatedly did him on oppo.

The 12 car grid for the 2018 Micro Bangers World Final was therefore as follows (reigning champion denoted by the italic C in gold brackets next to their name):
997 RIk (C) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 616 Jam
870 Looney - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 66 Colin
786 Brett - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 606 Jon
474 Miniman - - - - - - - - - - - - 573 Shane
217 Tilson - - - - - - - - - - - - - 47 Michal
271 Kizza - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2 Erinn

What started out as a mix of a few drivers in contention with one other was eventually whittled down to a single driver before the title was literally decided on the final straight...

2018 MICRO BANGERS WORLD FINAL
1st: Rik
2nd: Miniman
3rd: Shane
Other finishers: Kizza, Brett, Jam, Jon, Erinn, Michal, Looney, Colin

Claiming his second world title of the season after picking up the 2 Litres edition back in September, and at the same time retaining his Micro Bangers World title, is Rik, whose position on the outside front row proved incredibly effective as he broke away from the field and was rarely challenged early on. Colin and Jam had a decent early battle with #997 but the latter was removed from contention on lap 6 after #616's teammate Michal blew an oppo attempt on #66 that instead took out the 2016 European Champion. Miniman then put his case forward as a contender for the crown, with Shane and Erinn then eliminating Colin from a realistic shot, with #66 getting his revenge on the latter followed by Looney going on the oppo on the first bend to remove the skilled Scot from the contest and then decided to do #474 a few laps later.

With 10 laps remaining, it looked as if Rik would have a smooth ride to the title, with second place half a lap down on the dominant Dutchman. Alas, it was #870 again getting involved in everything, first doing the 2 Litre World Champ head-on and then spinning him out which closed the gap, but then did the same to the recently crowned Unlimited World Champion too! The flashpoint came with 5 laps left as Rik, being hassled by Brett, did #2 head on and lost control by going onto the infield and then ran wide just after crossing the start/finish line to avoid a head-on with Tilson, allowing Miniman to take the lead for the very first time in the race. #217 DID manage to catch #997 a lap later, but #474 failed to take advantage by first giving Erinn another head-on and then collecting Looney on the penultimate lap when trying to avoid him, letting Rik take the lead again. The last lap saw #474 just edge ahead but #997 was right on his bumper until the crucial moment saw the 2 Litre Champ grind the Unlimited Champ against the wall to keep the title and keep it away from his Team Bandicoot teammate. Shane completed the podium relatively easily, and as always, commiserations to those who finished the 22 lap race but got nothing for it, especially Kizza who was the sole driver on the lead lap not to finish in the top 3.

Once again Rik has demonstrated just how talented a driver he is with yet another title, and it's a shame we can't go back in time and put current day Rik with the likes of Burton, Youngy and Foster at their peaks: that would be some race to watch indeed.
