2018 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

Postby Jon#606 » Fri 14 Dec 2018, 11:53 pm

The final graded title and the last serious meeting of the 2018 LFS Bangers season was held tonight with the European Championship from Warneton. With only Miniman from the original grid unable to feature and 3 non-automatically qualified drivers appearing, it was decided that no Last Chance Qualifier would be held.

Here is the grid of twelve drivers that contested the 2018 European Championship (reigning champion denoted by the italic C in white brackets next to their name):

66 Colin - - - - - - - - - - 573 Shane
997 Rik - - - - - - - - - - - 870 Looney
606 Jon - - - - - - - - - - - 786 Brett
673 Sam M. - - - - - - - - - 911 Cole
616 Jam - - - - - - - - - - - 515 Josh
649 Dumbo - - - - - - - - - - 47 Michal (C)

This was quite possibly one of the greatest championship races seen on LFS Bangers, with a multitude of lead changes before one finally emerged to claim his maiden LFS Bangers title...

1st: Cole
2nd: Shane
3rd: Looney
Other finishers: Rik, Josh, Dumbo, Sam M., Brett

Northern Irishman Cole has always shown the ability to win races in his relatively short career on LFS Bangers, but has never managed to convert it into a title. Until now.

From the start it looked like Rik was going to be the first driver to win all 3 graded titles as he shot out from pole-sitter (and Team Bandicoot teammate) Colin and kept a healthy lead until Brett attempted to do him on oppo on the top bend which brought Shane into play. But both Ulstermen in the field - the aforementioned Cole and Josh - caught up to the leading trio and it was the latter who removed Colin from contention with a spin on the front straight. Another Bandicoot was battered on lap 4 as #786 finally caught #997 on the pit bend and spun him out alongside #573, allowing #911 to go into the lead for the first time with #515 behind him. Reigning champion MIchal then got into the leading pack after another attack from Brett on Rik slowed him down even further, but it was the Norn Iron duo holding a solid lead over the rest of the field (helped by WCW teammate Brett staying on oppo for practically the entire race ). On lap 9 was when Team Bandicoot decided to get into the oppo action as Colin did Josh head-on on the top bend on and then solidly on Cole the following lap, putting #515 into the lead for the first time and bunching the grid up once again as #911 was then spun out by #997. Sam M. then got in on the oppo action on the pit bend to help fellow Moat Shane and put #573 into the lead. Jam joined his Czech PiranMoto teammate in the chasing pack but it was the former 2 Litre World Champion leading at the halfway stage.

Both Cole and Josh were put out of contention temporarily as #616 shot up into third, before #66 did him head on and it looked like it was going to be a battle to the line for Rik and Shane. #786 clattered #573 on lap 15 and from then on it appeared that #997's 3 title destiny was secure. AS you can tell, that did not happen. #673 did the Dutchman head-on on lap 17 putting Shane back in front, and sent Michal up into 2nd with #911 superbly climbing back through the field to be 3rd. Shane was forced wide by Brett and that put #47 in the lead for the first time as it appeared he would be the first driver to retain the red and yellow chequered roof, but was spun out by #573. Dumbo catching #786 head-on proved vital as it blocked Shane and allowed both Cole and #997 to catch him, and it was the Ulsterman who expertly took both drivers out in one move to regain the lead. Incredibly, this was not the last time he would get the lead as Brett and Sam managed to take out the front three in one combined oppo attempt, allowing Michal through (although he had to grind #573 into the wall to do so!) with 3 laps left. Tragedy would strike for the defending champion though as on the penultimate lap, he was done head-on by #786 in such a manner that it rolled #47 and with #911 the closest, he shot past and held his position to take that maiden title. Shane recovered to claim second and Looney (largely in part thanks to a lag-affected head-on by Jam on RIk) claimed third despite not having really been in contention at any stage. As always, commiserations to those who finished the 22 lap race but got nothing for it, especially Rik and Josh who was the two drivers on the lead lap not to finish in the top 3.

Here are the results from the other races that took place tonight, which were all non-points. Well done to all the winners:
